Tips for Selecting Workbenches
Workbenches
People work faster and more efficiently when the work surface elevation does not force their wrists, arms and shoulders into awkward positions for long periods of time.
If the surface is too low, workers tend to move their eyes closer to their work. This causes back and neck strain.
If the surface is too high, workers tend to lift their shoulders and arms uncomfortably.
Both postures induce job-related fatigue and affect productivity. This is true whether standing or seated at the workstation. Standard desk height is 30". Standard bench height is 36"
Bench chairs are manufactured with a standard seat height of 21" to 31".
Desk height chairs are standard at 17" to 22".
When selecting a workbench, consider these variables:
- Working height (the elevation at which a person performs a task) should be approximately level with resting elbow height.
- Task requirements - current and future
- Adjustable chairs that are appropriate for bench height.
- Foot rest adjustments needed - on bench and on chairs.
- Individual characteristics of all potential users (physical strength, arm length, elbow height).
Safety factors to be considered:
- Foot and leg clearance - Allow for all user's legs and feet when sitting or standing.
- Eliminate pinch points by providing space between work bench of different heights.
- Weight load capacity - Determine highest anticipated weight to be loaded at one time.
- Work station stability - Select a load-bearing surface with a structure that prevents sway.
Before You Buy…Consider the option selections:
- Size of work surface - length and width
- Drawers - with or without lock
- Risers - Single shelves, or shelves with suspended cabinets elevated above the bench surface.
- ESD-Safe laminated surface. (Option is to use ESD table mats)
- Under-shelf lighting
- Power-strips
- Foot Rest
Buying a workbench is similar to buying a car. Buy the basic unit and add in the accessories.
